When your current tool gives you a number, can it show you every source that number came from?

The comfortable lie of a clean summary
A polished paragraph feels like an answer. It reads well, it sounds sure of itself, and it saves you an afternoon. But a summary is a compression, and compression throws information away. The question is not whether the output looks right — it is whether you can reconstruct how it was reached when someone who matters asks.
Most tools cannot. They generate a conclusion and discard the chain that produced it. You are left holding a number with no provenance, trusting a black box because the alternative — doing the work yourself — is exactly what you paid to avoid.
What traceability actually means

So ask the tool you use today the plain question: show me where this came from. If it can’t, you don’t have an analysis. You have a guess with good grammar.
